This Paper takes a cursory look at the convincing power of language as it affects church preaching in Nigeria. By using only one token, language, the paper does not deny the existence of other factors vital for the achievement of the precautionary effect of conviction. In other words, rather than doubt the authenticity and truthfulness of the content of a sermon given by a linguistically ill-equipped preacher, this study builds on a hypothetical construct which presuppose that the act of convincing, to some extent, depends on the communicative ability of the preacher. Using language competence as a premise for achieving effective and successful preaching, it argues that if adequate consideration is given to this factor, preaching will produce better results.
